Just wondering...

Which countries in the world have more coastal large cities?

By "large cities" I mean cities with more than 1 million people in the metropolitan area.

And by "coastal", I mean cities with salt water shores inside the urban area.

In the continental United States I can count between 10 to 13 of those large coastal cities, depending whether Houston, Baltimore and New Orleans can be considered coastal cities or not:

- New York City

- Los Angeles

- Houston (?)

- Miami

- Boston

- San Francisco

- Seattle

- San Diego

- Tampa Bay Area

- Baltimore (?)

- Hampton Roads (Norfolk–Virginia Beach)

- New Orleans (?)

- Jacksonville (Florida)

All 5 of Australias 1 million plus cities are on the coast, as are 13 of the 15 largest cities in the country.

Just shows how empty the middle of the place is.

Yes, Brazil's biggest cities are all on the coast, except Belo H., Brasilia. Manaus is not on a coast, but it's still a deepwater port.

India's three biggest cities are all on the coast. Norway's 500 biggest cities are all on the coast. Australia' state capitals are all on the coast.

Mexico is at the other extreme. It has full coastlines on both oceans, but only 4 of Mexico's 40 biggest cities are on a coast.

In the case of Brazil, I think Porto Alegre, Curitiba and Belem are not exactly coastal cities. Porto Alegre and Belem have harbours that connect to the ocean, but those are fresh water harbours. Curitiba is close to the coast, but not in the coast.

In India I can think of:

- Mumbai

- Chennai (formerly Madras)

- Kochi

- Thiruvananthapuram

- Bhavnagar

- Visakhapatnam

Only 6 large coastal cities in a country of more than 1 billion... The population of India is definitely not concentrated in the coast...
