I'd like to pose this question, philosophically I think its behind every issue that gets heated in the "world" forum.

So...Freedom vs. Safety.

you pick.

My choice - Freedom

let's discuss.

I think politicians have worked very hard at conditioning us to think the two are mutually exclusive. Personally I would choose freedom.

But I don't think its impossible to have both. You must be referring to the right wing "we'll get hit again if a Democrat wins" BS.

Ultimately Freedom is safety. The so called war on terror has been used for political aims and is disgrace. More like a war on our civil liberties and our human rights.

We have allowed the terrorists to win by being whipped up into a frenzy of terror and are allowing our governments to take away many of our rights and freedoms.

That is a tragedy, there is no safety worth having without Freedom. We have done exactly what terrorists wanted us to do and become paranoid as a society turning on others. Their aim was never to destroy us all but to scare us into feeling that every day was a potential disaster day.

I for one do not want to live in a society which justifies breaches of human rights because a small minority of extremists and murderers have decided to scare us with their bombs or threats of thereof.
We need to balance a sense for justice and safety with getting on with our lives.

I refuse to live my life hindered because of a few fanatics . That to me would be losing the war on terror.
Our politicians have used the situation to justify things which to me are unjustifiable. The concept of Freedom we have been told we are fighting for is being soiled and degraded by the manipulation of the issues surrounding terrorism.

I don't want all the victims of all terrorist attacks to have died in vain. They deserve better.
Knee-jerk reactions and gung-ho approaches to foreign policies are making a bad situation far worse and the problem a lot worse.

Freedom is worth fighting for and yes even dying for , but let's at least try to approach the issue with a modicum of intelligence and not go in all guns blazing when it is completely futile.
You cannot fight terrorism with terrorism , war and invasion. I just wish our politicians would realise this.

Making us into a police state will not resolve anything. A fresh approach is needed. I feel utterly manipulated by some politicians and used as a means of justification for something which to me is unconscionable.

How does one define "freedom" and "safety". You'll never be 100% safe no matter what politicians tell you. As for freedom, well, here in the United States we are very free but people cry that their freedoms have been taken away. I laugh at these people because most don't know what it's like to have their freedoms taken away (or never given).

Civil liberties?? Tell me how my civil liberties have been taken away? I can still do the things I want today that I could have done 20 years ago. Domestic spying has been going on for decades. Does that make it right? Well, I'm not sure but in the "blame Bush" era, people are blaming him like it he invented it. Bush has been an awful president no doubt about it, but all of our politicians as a whole have been just as bad.

While nobody wants a police state or anything that resembles a police state, I wonder if they'd mind a few tapped calls if one of them prevents another attack that may have murdered them or a loved one.

As for the terrorist never wanting to destroy us, well, you could have fooled me. They would rather have us dead or worshipping their form of Islam than live as we do now.

And if you get a chance , see the movie "Taking liberties" to see what's happening in the UK thanks to Bush and his little poodle Blair.

It always starts off like this. A police state doesn't usually just happen overnight.

Same can be said regarding militant Islam and its rise.

The United States will NEVER be a police state and the domestic wiretapping will continue on long after Bush is gone. Hell, it was going on during the Clinton years!

Thanks for the links to the popular left-wing mouthpieces whom have no agenda whatsoever.

Hmm. Blaming Bush for ENGLAND's issues. That's a new one. I'll put that on the list of things that are Bush's fault right behind the one that says he caused global warming and in front of he caused Hurricane Katrina.

Go to the Middle East and Africa. There's where you will see no civil liberties. Don't even compare England and the US to these countries.
