French existed in Canada before english and Spanish existed in the US before English.....
in your dreams these two minority communities will leave their roots just because anglos want it to be so!!!
the FIRST europeans to ever set foot on the US were from Spain, and the FIRST AMERICAN CITY EVER is called SAN AGUSTIN and was a Spanish overseas city for centuries!!! also over half of the US was colonized by Spain for centuries and then turned mexico and then the US snatched it.... why do they need to forget their roots to adapt to anglos?
the same goes with the quebecois in canada! they were there first, why do they need to anglicize themselves?
Ah yes, an entire society has to become anglicized and cease to exist culturally just in case one day Owen (sickandtiredofthis) or pbmaise happen to be driving from Toronto to Halifax and shan't be inconvenienced by people speaking another language when they stop for gas or lunch.

Yes we can't ruin delicate Anglo sensitivities. How rude and savage of us
I don't see why French Canadians should give up their language, their heritage and their culture just for the irrational fear and paranoia of Anglophone speakers.
In Milan I heard some tourists complain that people didn't speak English expecting everyone to speak it; we aren't a single homogeneous English-speaking world and we'll never be, thanks God.
English as spoken by italians is hard to understand.
When I was travelling in Milan, at entrance in the hotel the concierge asked me: "vazza ruma?". I took more than one minute to understand that she was asking me: "what is your room?". Then, I started talking with her mixing portuguese with italian, and we understood each other without problems.
San francisco = saint francis
los angeles = the angels
san diego = saint william
las vegas = the flatlands
colorado = redness
nevada = snowed
florida = flowered
dallas = land plots
el paso = the pass
sacramento = sacrament

oh and in canada
montreal = royal mountain
trois-rivières = three rivers

but why stop there
let's just adopt the british flag for all of north america and also stop the indigenous names such as manitoba, ottawa, toronto, utah, dakota, illinois, mississippi, alabama, tallahassee
it should all exclusively have anglo names
let's rename Utah (Dover upon salt lake) and Winnipeg (Dover upon prairies)

Even Valdez, in Alaska
But the thought of an international language replacing other languages is outdated, as outdated as the ages of empires and manifest destiny.
The British Empire conquered Quebec and Montreal and they respected their culture. I wonder what would have happened if the Americans would have conquered Canada during 1812. The British also conquered Menorca and Havana during the 18th Century, and they never imposed their language or their mores. In fact, during their rule, there was far more free trade and the local merchants were happier. They even managed to get along with the church.
During the war of 1812, British sided with Indians to create an Indian nation in the Midwest capable of controlling "colonials". Spain sided with British giving shelter to Indians in Florida, and as usual, Spain lost Florida.
In Ireland it was different, as they viewed the island as a "lebensraum" filled with people that were to be enslaved and dispossed of their land (another era, normans, cromwell). Northern Ireland still suffers the ocupation.
If we're going that route we'd have to change the name of Canada itself.
something original like australians and their original names for the states
Canada = new Britain
USA = new isle of mann
and chicago london upon the lakes
