Hey, good folks of City Data, thanks so much for the ideas!
I should have noted that I only make US$15/HR (US$33K/year) -- but because this job will let me telecommute from anywhere, I'm looking to maximize any exchange rates and/or cost-of-living differences...thanks again for all the advice!!
You have some good choices there. As for Malmo, i do enjoy it, i think it has decent amount of things to do, it's clean safe and as you said yourself it is close to some great cities. I haven't been to Gothenburg, so i can't comment on that. Cape Town is actually safer than most people would imagine...yes, it's not Zurich or Vienna but still safe.
Safe... mhm, the citizens of Malmö have grown a fetish for hand grenades it seems. Fire in the hall!

Then you need to go to Chiang Mai, Thailand....very low cost, good food, adequate housing, lots of expats, decent internet.
Maybe not. Where I'm working right now, Arequipa, Peru, it's probably almost as cheap as CM, is a bit cleaner (although I notice the trash after returning from USA visits), has a better climate, and you can become part of the culture over time if you get Spanish down whereas in CM, you'll always be a farang.

I realized this last time I was in Thailand. For all the fun, beauty, and culture it offers, the whole "farang" mentality might make me balk at retirement there.
I was really impressed by the amenities and affordability of Budapest. It's a beautiful city with amazing cultural assets and the people seemed fairly friendly and spoke enough English to make things easy. The fact that it's centrally located in Europe with excellent rail links is amazing considering how affordable it is.
