For those that like to travel around the world, do you eat street foods? Particularly in places like Asia or Latin America where vendors cook meals right there in street stalls (not restaurants).
I might once in a while but am a bit phobic about the hygienic levels of these stalls. The cost is cheaper and the taste can be great, but not something I usually do.
I have in China and Thailand and didn't get sick but I was selective. In the USA, I will eat from food trucks as I know they are inspected like everyone else. In Peru, I didn't eat from street vendors very often and I did get sick a couple times from the local food although it was delicious.
I have street food pretty frequently in Taiwan cause it's cheap and good, and I've never been sick because of it, but I'm Taiwanese so maybe my stomach is already used to the poison, who knows.
I always do. And have done so even in east Africa where the food was being cooked in a brake drum over a fire fed with dung and stirred with a piece of sheet metal.

Street food all over Mexico is cheap and delicious, only once got food poisoning and it was at a restaurant not a street vendor. Geez, I'm now in the mood for tacos al pastor, yummi!
Yes. I actually prefer it. It took me awhile to get comfortable with it in India, but once I was, there was no going back. Mexico City has been my favourite place for street vendors so far.
Also, as far as hygiene: just look at what's going on. That's the leg-up you have over restaurants where you will never get to see the kitchen without looking like a psycho. If there's lots of people around and it seems clean enough, why forgo such cheap and delicious snacks?

Caveat: Locals always build up an immunity to the strains of bacteria or viruses in these foods. It's acquired and easily lost without constant exposure to these foods.

Mexican street food really is so goood, it makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Especially tacos. Unfortunately you can't find tacos that good here in the US.
