I would simply go by the world tourism rankings. So that means, Bangkok, hong kong, singapore, london, NYC, paris, dubai, tokyp, etc. would be ontop

Of the cities I have visited, those with the most impressive skylines are:

1. New York City
2. Hong Kong
3. Shanghai
4. Vancouver
5. Chicago

Since most old European cities don't have Skylines, if I had to rate city centers, these would be my picks

1. Amsterdam
2. Paris
3. London
4. New York City
5. Madrid

In terms of London and Paris parts of the cities do have skyscrapers and a skyline. Whilst Madrid also has some skyscrapers.

Places such as La Defense in Paris or the City of London/Canary Wharf in London have decent skylines.

Can somebody explain the obsession with skylines on this website? I have never encountered such enthusiasm for modern skyscrapers anywhere else. It seems bizarre, especially when assessing the centre (downtown) of the city, which is often conspicuous for its absence of skyscrapers and careful attention to preserving historical heritage.

If you're not talking about the city planning advantages of densification, it's basically a materialistic status symbol.

Some cities pull off a sense of prestige and power without one (London comes to mind, even though it's building a skyline now). For other cities, a skyline is an integral part of the city brand identity and they would seem bland and mundane without one.

A fun test would be to remove all buildings over 200' in every American city, the list of "best" cities would dwindle.
