I'm binary on this.
Either I feel 100% safe or I don't and I'm carefull. As for the safety level in the streets -the one people are the most interested with- I'm carefull the same way everywhere, Vienna Paris London L.A Las Vegas Madrid blablabla. Basics like being carefull in the "bad neighborhoods", try to avoid them, it's simpler (sometimes you can't). Not a ton of money on me, check for pickpockets, avoid stupid tricks in the streets (I like the gold ring one, once I threw it in the Seine -police wasn't very far away-)... Once you did this, you get rid of 99% of the probems
For houses, alarm system connected to the insurance company (I have a website to activate It remotely) and police and I feel OK. Car is pretty annoying to "defend" except its alarm. But today with electronic keys... It's so easy to steal a car hum..
Except
Japan and Korea. (I didn' visit Singapore or Taiwan or whatever). I'm simply in a care bears world there. Absolutely no attention to anything related to "safety".

The only city in the world where I was pickpocketed was Paris.

This surprised me since that didn't happen to me even in very densely populated cities in third world countries.

When you see Tokyo far below Munich, you know that ranking is funny.
When you see London far below Cairo, you know that ranking is funny.

Never happened to me in 6 years
But they are pro, they know who are the good targets, it's easy to see who is easy to distract for them, even to normal parisians.
I would be a great target in Rome definitely

That list seems much more accurate to me. Interesting that 4 of the 20 most dangerous cities are in the good ol' USA.

As for the US, I would say NYC(especially Manhattan) is probably one of the safest places I have been to, if not the safest.
yes it is and has always been in the top 10 in the world and # 1 in America. This list is crap, lol.

By the way, how do you know that a city you're in is unsafe (other than looking up statistics)? Do people look at you in a mean way when you're walking down the street, or are people pointing rifles at you?

Serious question.

I was there and felt very unsafe. I couldn’t wait to leave that place.
