Here's a list I found of California cities with a population of over 50,000 from safest to least safe. Interestingly, San Jose and San Diego are just below the halfway mark. The majority of the most dangerous cities are in Central and Northern California.

Yeah, when I go to visit some of these cities, I can assure you I will not be cowering in fear, or afraid of venturing out.

Wouldn't they be if they were unsafe?

Oakland stays losing as usual. It's the Baltimore of the West Coast in terms of having a high crime rate.

Violent crimes per 100K residents
Oakland 1976.8
Baltimore 1401.2

Property crimes per 100K residents
Oakland 6233.4
Baltimore 4944.7

Santa Barbara is at #127? Worse than Los Angeles? That's a surprise.

Santa Cruz MORE dangerous than Redding?! Never would have thought that in a million years. And fwiw, I actually feel safer in San Francisco than I do in Redding...

I've lived in Fresno, Merced, Salinas, Sacramento and outside Modesto (Oakdale). Some of the worst according to the list. I never felt unsafe in any of them. No break ins, no car thefts, no assaults - nothing. Oh wait, someone unscrewed the antenna off my old Taurus in Fresno back in the 90s. Wow. I've pretty much discovered if you lock your doors, don't leave stuff in your car, don't do drugs and don't run with the Nortenos or Surenos you'll probably never have an issue.
