More Taipei love here. I live in NYC, but I'm back here for another month or so--I'd definitely put both NYC and Taipei on the top for different reasons.
I also hand Manila a big disappointment booby prize.
København, hands down for best city. I love it here. It's beautiful, but could be a tad warmer.
Most of the Scandinavian countries seem to have their stuff together. Everything 'works'. There seems to be a plan in place, it is followed, and the people like it. The societies are social without being homogenized. I fit in a lot better here than I do at 'home' in the USA.
Beaches in Greece are pretty nice too.
Reykjavik deserves a shout out as well, as does all of Iceland.
My "best" seems to change every time I visit a place. My last trip took in southern Africa, so at this point, I'd say my favourite country I've visited is Namibia. Favourite city: Cape Town.
After my next trip, wherever that may be, I'm sure my "best" will change again. The world has so many fabulous places and our experiences of them are very personal and individual.
minibrings: Urrrrrg don't tell me Luang Prabang!!!! I am going to Vietnam in a couple of weeks and I REALLY wanted to go to Luang Prabang...but flying there from Hanoi costs $320US and it's beyond what I can afford (I'll only have 4 days there so it's not worth it). Why do you love it so much?
Wait til you get to Hanoi to check out Air Vietnam or Lao Air flights. I bought a Bangkok airways pass before i left Australia and got a deal on a route from Bangkok-siem Reap-luang Prabang-Chiang Mai. It was about 75 per flight segment. From Chiang Mai to Bangkok I took Air Asia.
Why do I like LP? After the crazy noise of Bangkok, aggressive vendors and tuk tuk drivers in Siem Reap, LP was a surprisingly laid back friendly place. When you tell la tuk tuk driver No he smiles and leaves you alone. NOBODY tried selling me sex (its against the law for a Laotian to spend the night with a foreigner), the temples are amazing. countryside beautiful (Caves, waterfalls). No SIGNS warning you that pedophilia is a crime! Good food. Friendly people. Its a good place to relax. There is nothing like watching monks come out of temples early every morning to collect alms..
then later on at night seeing them at internet cafes playing video games!
