We're thinking of relocating to Lander up in the Red Canyon area about 20 miles south. Was wondering if anyone could tell us how windy it gets in the winter???

According to the following wind-speed map, the areas of the darkest green correspond to the least windy areas of the state. From what I can see, it would appear that Lander is in one of these least windy "pockets." However, it's also apparent that just immediately south of Lander, and as you get closer to the Wind Rivers and higher in elevation, the wind speeds increase exponentially. As for the wind speeds and climate characteristics of the Red Canyon itself in wintertime, hopefully some of our Lander contingent around here might have some additional insight on the wind patterns in this area.

In town it wasn't bad... I wouldn't live in the canyon without a decent 4WD vehicle with a good snow plow/blower. I thought Minnesota winters were colder, though Lander winters tend to last a lot longer.

We get a lot more wind in the warmer months than in the winter. And yes, winter seems to last longer than other states, but I don't think it gets as cold. Yes, sometimes you will get a week of below zero temps, and others you have snow, and temps in the thirties. It varies.

Lander does get some extreme snowfall amounts, more than many parts of the state.
