Driving to Cody - Rt 14 or 14A?
Hi all,
If one were driving to Cody from the east (getting off I-90 around Sheridan), is it better to use Route 14 through Greybull or Route 14A through Lovell. They both seem to be about the same distance-wise. Which route is usually faster? Any pros and cons to either?
Thanks!

It all depends on the weather/season. 14A is usually closed all winter, so if you are traveling then you will have to take 14. If going during the summer both ways are beautiful, but 14A is steeper and windier (not wind, like blows, but wind, like crooked!) so if you like that type of scenery I'd take it. Once you get down the mountain Lovell is a bit closer to Cody than Greybull. If it's not winter time then it's personal preference on which way to go. Maybe if you're making a round trip, go one way going and the other on your way back!

You probably won't get off I-90 at Sheridan - you'll get off at the exit for Ranchester/Dayton, and then you'll drive through Ranchester, then through Dayton, and then up 14 over the mountains. If you see the exit for Parkman, you've missed your exit.
There is a place called "Burgess Junction" where 14 and 14A diverge, and that is where 14A will be closed.

We took 14A during middle of summer last year. It was VERY steep - 10% grade. We had to pull over a couple times to let the brakes cool off. Not much traffic on it though
It was 60 deg at Burgess Junction and 102 deg at Lovell.

If you are coming from the east and don't need to go all the way to Sheridan, get off at Buffalo and take Hwy 16. They usually keep the snow off better in the winter and the time isn't much different (especially if you take the Nowood Rd cutoff to Manderson instead of going into Worland).
