Hello, I live in Rock Hill, SC and just purchased a vehicle in NC. The bill of sale shows a NC Highway Use Tax of $300, and then another sales tax of $181.25. We just paid the property tax on the vehicle that we traded in, Equinox, in the amount of $118.48. My husband took the bill of sale and that receipt for the the taxes we paid on the Equinox to the treasurer's office and now I'm looking at a receipt for another $411.19 for the new vehicle. Is this correct? Value of new vehicle is $30,250.00.

I know when I bought my car in NC, i paid the SC sales tax right there. Then I had to pay the property tax on it as well. The sales tax on cars in SC has a cap. Not sure what the highway use tax is as I dont believe thats a factor in SC.

Interesting, I just purchased a vehicle in NC as well, and they didn't charge me the highway use tax or the property tax. I have to go down to the tax collector this week so I'll let you know how it goes.

We also just purchased a car in NC, paid the SC sales tax and transferred the plate to the new ride. Had to bring the new registration to the tax office in Rock Hill and pay the property taxes. We did not pay a NC hwy use tax.

Thanks everyone. I'm still trying to see what I can find out. I'm going to go to the DMV this weekend and if they can't figure it out I may call the NC DMV as well and maybe even a different NC dealership. I feel like something isn't right but I'm not sure what. We've had problems with this dealership almost every step of the way after we signed so I'm on high alert.

IF you paid the $300 sales tax when you bought the car in NC, you should get credit for that in SC when the vehicle is registered at the DMV.

Because SC's sales tax caps out at $300, you don't get credit for more than that.

Not sure if the NC dealer should have collected the $300 AND the $181.25. Check with them, and if you don't get good resolution, check with NC's equivalent of SCDMV's Dealer Services Unit.

If you need more help from SCDMV, call (803) 896-5000.
