Description: Located in the Alabama Power Building downtown, the Alabama Historical Radio Society (AHRS) and Don Kresge Memorial Museum have been providing lovers of old-time radio with unique events and exhibits for over 20 years. See the old radios from the early part of the 20th century and even listen to some of the old programs, such as Dick Tracy, that drew listeners to the speaker each week. The pride and joy of the museum, however, is the world’s only surviving “SuperFlex” radio receiver manufactured right here in Birmingham in 1927. In addition to the cool old-time radios, the AHRS provides a series of interesting discussions on all things radio. Got an old radio you’d like to restore? This is the group for you. Parents will get a kick out of explaining to children raised in the iPod era just what these curious, funny-looking old devices of wood, cloth, and metal were used for.
