Description: Perhaps the South’s greatest artistic contribution, jazz has a rich history in the Magic City and in Alabama—and it is all captured at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. Located at the Carver Theatre in Birmingham’s historic Civil Rights District, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame features over 2,200 square feet of priceless memorabilia related to the history of jazz in Alabama and the greater southeast. Aside from photographs and memorabilia, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame also offers a number of fun and educational programs at no charge. Among the most popular of the programs is the “Free Saturday Jazz” series. These free classes are taught by the Jazz Hall’s Director of Student Jazz Programs Ray Reach and Director of Education, Emeritus, Dr. Frank Adams and are free to the public. In addition to “Free Saturday Jazz,” the Jazz Hall also features a number of workshops and clinics taught by various jazz greats. Past guest instructors have included Thelonious Monk and Bill Goodwin, among others. Visit the Jazz Hall website for more information on upcoming workshops. Of course, once you’ve attended these clinics and have become a jazz master, don’t just throw out your old instrument. Donate it to the Jazz Hall’s Musical Instrument Recycling Program. This program takes used instruments and cleans and repairs them and gives them to budding young musicians in need of an instrument. The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame is a wonderful place to inspire the next generation of musicians.
