Description: Want to bet the ponies? Turf Paradise features live thoroughbred racing and betting on simulcast races from late September to early May. Although the main attraction is horse racing, the track’s floral gardens, olive grove, 3 lakes, orchid trees, palm trees, and waterfall let the track live up to its name. The exotic avian wildlife includes swans, flamingos, and herons. The tranquil setting contrasts with the high adrenaline in the grandstand.Walter Cluer announced he would build a horse track on the 1,400-acre site back in 1954, when the spot was many miles from Phoenix. Now, although encircled by growth, it maintains its desert oasis atmosphere. The raceway features book-style betting carrels and a trackside, resort-style swimming pool, in addition to 2 restaurants (the elegant Turf Club and the casual Clubhouse). There are also 2 rooms for banquets and the top-level Director’s Suite. All provide good views of the racing action. Admission is $2 for the grandstand and an additional $2 for the clubhouse levels.
