You can visit anytime; make your first stop the visitor center. The Sun City Visitor Center, 16824 N. 99th Ave., located in the Bell Recreation Center (623-876-3040; www.sunaz.com/centers/bell), is chock-full of pamphlets, maps, fliers, and magazines describing the dozens of recreational opportunities, housing options, social clubs, and more for would-be residents. It’s also the place to arrange for a guided tour. Sun City’s 7 recreation centers are conveniently dispersed around town. A look around will tell you in an instant that residents in these parts don’t like sitting still. The centers encompass 7 swimming pools (6 outdoor and 1 indoor); 2 libraries; a variety of classes in crafts, hobbies, and fine arts; square dancing and ballroom dancing; fitness rooms; and bowling alleys. Add to that therapy pools, lawn bowling, tennis courts, miniature golf, and shuffleboard; 8 golf courses belong to the recreation centers and 3 country clubs. Check with the visitor center for specifics on the community’s amenities. The motto “Keeping Sun City Beautiful” rings true thanks to the Sun City residents who volunteer for the Sun City Prides. They spend untold hours picking up litter, raking the landscaped medians, trimming bushes, painting the trunks of the community’s 1,800 orange trees, caring for the automatic watering systems, and reporting needed street repairs. County government officials once estimated the Prides’ services to be worth more than $500,000 a year. The Sun City Sheriff’s Posse, volunteers coordinated by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, helps Sun City maintain one of the lowest crime rates for a US city of its size. Posse members help with neighborhood watches, search and rescue, and home-security surveys.
