Description: This accredited primary-­care facility is the only hospital in the Florida Keys to offer maternity services. Lower Florida Keys Health System maintains 169 beds, a 24-hour emergency room, a clinical lab, and a heliport. Added services include pediatrics, inpatient and outpatient psychotherapy, physical therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and cardiovascular and ambulatory care. The hospital offers substance-­abuse assistance and comprehensive wellness programs.

Description: Formerly Kings Point Marina, Key West’s largest marina facility has wet slips available up to 80 feet and the T-­Head accommodates yachts up to 120 feet. Amenities include a complete tackle shop, a large bathhouse with laundry, a restaurant, fuel, and repair services on-­site.

Description: One of the last frontiers of true Keys hangouts, Hogfish Bar and Grill is where the locals go and the fishing boat captains congregate—if you can find it. To get there, take US 1 North out of Key West and across the Cow Key Channel Bridge. At the third stoplight, bear to the right and onto MacDonald Avenue. Follow this for approximately 1 mile and make a right on Fourth Avenue. Take your next left on Front Street and drive almost to the end—you’ll see the Hogfish Bar and Grill on the right. Once you are there, belly up to a picnic table and order the signature Hogfish “Killer” sandwich, which is a fish sandwich smothered with onions and mushrooms on freshly baked Cuban bread.

Description: Where’s the fish? A little Insider help is needed to negotiate for fish at this place, known to locals as having the freshest at the best prices. The fish market is directly behind Rusty Anchor Restaurant, which is on Third Avenue (see our Restaurants chapter), although no sign on Third Avenue indicates the fishmonger’s presence. Simply park at the restaurant and they will show you the way to the fishery. Find out about the catch of the day. Rusty Anchor is known for some of the best prices on jumbo stone crab claws and colossal shrimp (“under 15s”).

Description: The main campus of Florida Keys Community College offers many more classes of interest to seniors than the other branches up the Keys. Art classes in ceramics, stained glass, jewelry making, lettering and calligraphy, drawing, wheel throwing, printmaking, photography, graphic arts, painting, and sculpture will intrigue the artistically inclined. FKCC has a beautiful swimming pool and offers classes in water aerobics and fitness swimming. Seniors can take classes as non-­degree-­seeking students or work toward an associate of arts or associate of science degree.Lifelong learning doesn’t necessarily mean that you must enroll in a degree program or semester-­long course. FKCC also offers a variety of continuing education workshops and seminars. These classes may meet for a single session or several weeks, depending on the complexity of the subject matter.

Everyone knows what this humanitarian organization means to any community, near and far. 9. Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden

Description: Maintained by volunteers from the Key West Botanical Garden Society and funded by donations since 1935, this 11-acre garden represents the last undeveloped native hardwood hammock in the environs of Key West. Despite its proximity to US 1 and a busy public golf course, the garden is surprisingly peaceful. It features exotic and native plants that can be viewed from a series of walking trails and is home to numerous birds and butterflies, especially during the spring and fall migration seasons. On any given day, you’re apt to see a turtle sunning itself on a log or an egret searching for food in Desbiens Pond. You can also sit in the quiet, restored Toppino Nature Chapel.

10. Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center

Description: The Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center (TWFAC) opened in January 1980 on the campus of Florida Keys Community College with the world premiere of Tennessee Williams’s unpublished play Will Mr. Merriweather Return from Memphis? Named for one of Key West’s most illustrious writers, this 478-seat, air-­conditioned theater features a thrust stage extending 8 feet in front of the curtain line, a fly system, and a state-­of-­the-­art lighting and sound system. The Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center produces a full season of dance, theater, chamber music, and shows by nationally known performing artists. Professional touring companies, like Spamalot and Pilobolus, bring a wave of nationally and internationally recognized artists to the Florida Keys.
