Description: Built here at the Fore River Shipyard in the mid-1940s and commissioned in 1949, the USS Salem was the flagship of the US Navy’s Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and the Second Fleet in the Atlantic. In its 10 years of service, this US naval cruiser never saw action in war and is remembered mostly for serving as a hospital ship during the Ionian earthquake of 1953. Named after Salem, Massachusetts, home of the 1692 witchcraft trials, the ship was nicknamed the “Sea Witch” by sailors and is thought to be haunted. The ship is open for guided and self-guided tours June through Oct.
