Description: Prince George’s Hospital Center, with 290 beds, is the county’s largest medical facility—and one of its most comprehensive. Private and nonprofit, PGHC is recognized nationwide for its outstanding 24-hour emergency care and is the designated regional trauma-care center for all of southern Maryland. Its level I shock-trauma unit boasts a 97 percent save rate for patients, one of the highest in the nation. PGHC also specializes in cardiac care and is the only hospital in the county with an open-heart surgery program. A wide range of obstetric services enables the hospital to handle high-risk pregnancies and difficult deliveries and to care for premature babies. A specialized unit called the Birthplace allows labor, delivery, and recovery to take place in one area. For outpatient services the hospital offers a newly redesigned short-stay center. Other services at PGHC include family practice, gastroenterology, neurology, oro-facial plastic surgery, podiatry, psychiatry, sports medicine, and urology. A recently built ambulatory surgical wing features 10 operating rooms.
