1. Sheepscot Harbour Village And Resort

City: Edgecomb, ME
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (207) 882-6343 or (800) 437-55
Address: 306 Eddy Rd.

Description: This plumb location on the edge of the Sheepscot just across the river from Wiscasset has seen all kinds of inns and restaurants come and go. This is the latest version and it’s big and impressive, with a 13-room inn, a fleet of cottages, and a raft of condo-type hotel suites. Rooms in the inn have nice views out over their balconies, and they are equipped with all the modern amenities from air-conditioning to Wi-Fi to cable. Closer to the water’s edge are the cottages, which are freshly shingled 1920s-era structures that have been rehabbed and would be comfortable for a week or more. Longer than that and you probably want a condo-style townhouse, which has a full kitchen and a living room overlooking the Sheepscot.

2. Edgecomb Potters

City: Edgecomb, ME
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (207) 882-9493
Address: 727 Boothbay Rd.

Description: Specializing in porcelain and known for their glazes, Edgecomb Potters have been at it since 1977, when Richard and Chris Hilton opened shop in an old schoolhouse. Today they have more than 30 employees and three galleries—here in Edgecomb, and ones in the Old Port and Freeport—each filled with artfully crafted shell bowls, ikebanas, vases, glass works, and even jewelry. And they always seem to be expanding their base (recently adding a 25,000-square-foot storage building).

3. Margonelli Fine Furniture

City: Edgecomb, ME
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (207) 633-3326
Address: 780 River Rd.

Description: David Margonelli’s showroom is all but obscured by the foliage on River Road, but you’re going to want to turn into the drive and have a look. The contemporary furniture here is exquisite—handmade and known for clean lines, elegant curves, and a classic simplicity—and it’s often constructed with Margonelli’s Flexure system, which allows for curving pieces to be interchanged for different looks and flexible uses.

4. Fort Edgecomb State Historic Site

City: Edgecomb, ME
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (207) 882-7777
Address: 66 Fort Rd.

Description: An octagonal blockhouse built in 1809 to protect Wiscasset Harbor, Fort Edgecomb is the best-preserved fort of the period in the nation, and its grassy slopes overlook the Sheepscot River. The old bastion is a fairly simple affair made of blocky wood, and you can run through it in no time, reading the interpretive panels and peering out through the musket holes. But the grounds offer some of the best picnicking you’re going to find in the area. Try not to look at the power plant offshore, and concentrate on the scenic coves instead. You may see circling osprey or bobbing seals. The fort is just a skip from Route 1, so you can wait out Wiscasset’s infamous traffic if you like. Open daily from Memorial through Labor Day.
