Description: Get a glimpse of Mecklenburg County life more than a century ago at the Carl J. McEwan Historic Village off Matthews-Mint Hill Road. The Mint Hill Historical Society has brought together original buildings of historical value to re-create the Mint Hill of a bygone era. The Mint Hill Country Doctor’s Museum is the restored building of Dr. Ayer Whitley, one of the last country doctors in Mecklenburg County. Also on site are the Ira V. Ferguson Country Store, circa 1921, and the Ashcroft One Room Schoolhouse, built in the late 1800s when the county mandated a school be built every five miles so that children could walk to their studies. There are also several other outbuildings, and the assay office of Mint Hill’s old Surface Hill Gold Mine, which was part of the first gold rush in the United States.Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tues to Sat or by appointment. A farmers’ market also is held 9 a.m. to noon Sat, May through Sept. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children, students, and seniors.
