Description: Reno’s only daily newspaper, the Gazette-Journal, reaches about 145,000 readers Monday through Saturday and about 185,000 on Sunday. One of about 100 newspapers owned by the Gannett Co., Inc., it constantly wins awards in its parent company’s yearly in-house competitions and also takes home its share of awards from the Nevada Press Association. Most criticism of the newspaper stems from the fact that it is a Gannett-owned product. Gazette-Journal critics condemn the newspaper for putting profit above good journalism and ridicule it for taking the path of least resistance with its editorials. Proponents of the newspaper say they like its community-oriented tradition and the way the Gazette-Journal concentrates on local news. The newspaper prints a Best Bets tabloid insert every Thursday, covering the casino, entertainment, and nightlife scenes. On Friday it produces a guide to arts and entertainment outside the casinos, including movies and the local music scene, and on Saturday it distributes a real estate guide to the area.
