Description: When you visit the Flower Farmer, south and east of Portland in Canby, you will find yourself with plenty of company—and not all children. The main draw is the train, and in particular Sparky and Fred. Sparky is a pint-size, 30-horsepower diesel engine that pulls the Phoenix and Holly Railroad’s 15-inch narrow-gauge train through flowerbeds and fields on a winding half-mile circuit of tracks. The bright red caboose is named Fred. Together they attract daily crowds of preschoolers, schoolchildren, seniors, and anybody else with a love of narrow-gauge trains. The train makes its circular journey through tunnels and past fun displays, making a stop at a petting zoo with chickens, turkeys, and a miniature donkey. Another stop brings you to a pumpkin patch, with a colossal hay pyramid that kids love and parents hate. The final stop is the gift shop, with ice cream and other treats, as well as a good selection of dried flowers, fresh flowers, and seasonal produce. The Flower Farmer is open from daily; the train runs on the weekends, The hours may vary, so be sure call or check the website. Many events are scheduled throughout the year, especially at Halloween and Christmas.
