Description: The Waldorf School ethos is very Portland; in fact, there are other Waldorf-based schools in the area, two of which have started up recently—Cedarwood (see Private Elementary School Programs) and Swallowtail in Hillsboro, (503) 846-0336. But the Portland Waldorf School is the original one in the area, established in 1982. Known for fostering creativity by nurturing the “head, heart, and hands” of the whole child, the Waldorf School challenges its students to develop their intellect and compassion. Kindergarten focuses on storytelling, music, movement, and artistic activity. The academic program is culturally enriched with Spanish and German, needlework, drama, drawing and painting, gardening, folk dancing, orchestra, and woodworking. Portland Waldorf has an enrollment of about 300 students and a faculty and staff of about 50 persons. The Portland Waldorf School serves students through 12th grade.

Insider Pick:

Description: This Disneyland-ish water world is a wonderfully wet place for the kids to cool off during the long hot days of July and August. With wave pools, wading pools, diving pools, three water slides, and a whirlpool, you can bet the little ones will return home all tuckered out. Adults pay a little more. (See the Recreation chapter for more information.)
