High Springs, FL: This 1956 vintage Electro-Motive diesel (FCEN 47) was seen at Prime Conduit in High Springs on November 7, 2008, on the Florida Northern Rail Road. This approximately 1.75 mile straight length of track passing through the center of High Springs is all that remains of the Atlantic Coast Line track from Alachua through High Springs and Fort White to Live Oak. Thanks to local businesses who use rail, sights like this are still with us. This stretch of line connects south to Newberry via a switch just north of the Golden Peanut Company. These fragments of the old Alachua County railroad system, as well as remaining track beds that could be re-laid, offer the opportunity for the development of a local light passenger public transport rail system that could serve the community in the years ahead and the population density and industrial, commercial, and residential development increases in the area in combination with higher fuel prices.
