Paterson: Municipal Government

Paterson operates under the mayor-council form of government. The municipal council consists of nine members, six of whom are elected by and represent the six wards of the city. The remaining three at-large members of the council are elected by the general populace, as is the mayor. The mayor serves four-year terms, with primary responsibility for the day-to-day administration of the city. The council is responsible for reviewing and approving legislation that affects the municipality. Paterson serves as the seat of Passaic County, New Jersey.
