Canyon del Muerto - Chinle, AZ - a canyon filled with history


Canyon del Muerto located in Chinle, Arizona is where a prehistoric Indian burial ground was found in 1882. The name translates to Canyon of the Dead. The canyon has a number of historical artifacts within its walls. The beauty of the area makes it worth visiting at least once.

The canyon offers visitors the opportunity for driving, camping and horse riding in addition to the opportunities to see historical sites first hand. It is one side of the Canyon de Chelly National Monument with over a hundred ancient cliff dwellings.

The walls of the canyon are covered etchings, carvings and paintings from ancient cultures. There are even towns in the cliff dwellings. The canyon along with the Monument Canyon and Canyon de Chelly are in the Canyon de Chelly National Monument that covers one hundred and thirty-one square miles.

Antelope House can be seen where Black Rock Canyon and Canyon del Muerto meet at North Rim Drive. The areas surroundings have inspired both jewelry designs and drawings. The Mummy Cave Overlook can be found further into the canyons along with Massacre Cave Overlook.

The Canyon del Muerto with its rich history and beauty are somewhere you have to see if you are in Chinle, Arizona.
