Mummy Cave - Chinle, AZ - a cave where ancient civilizations lived and even left mummies behind


Mummy Cave located in Chinle, Arizona's Canyon de Chelly Canyon is what remains of an ancient settlement. The cave was occupied from 300 to 1300AD by various cultures. There have been ruins found from the Ancestral Puebloans as well as Basketmaker in the area. The buildings of the ancient societies can still be seen in the cave.

The cave gets its name from two bodies that were found during the 1880's wrapped in yucca in the alcove. The artifacts uncovered make the site one of historical significance.

The story tower's top is made of timbers that were cut during 1284AD. The tower had to be stabilized during the 1930's because it was in danger of collapsing. The village remains can be seen during a guided tour or from the rim of the canyon over looking it.
