Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting Again / Why Just One Day For A Museum?

Posted 02-10-2010 at 06:45 AM by case44

Here I go again with this bit called Scattershooting at this beacon of light known as Case's Column. Let me light up your life right now with views, news, tips, and anything else I pull out of my imaginary magician's hat.

One of these days, I would like to trek back to Wichita Falls, Texas, because (1) I need an excuse to get back to Marty's Pioneer for their breakfast scramble and (2) I have been meaning to visit the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum. There's nothing in this world like a good railroad museum. Trains, cabooses, and everything in between before your very eyes. There is a train museum closer to where I live, and the one in my immediate area is moving from Dallas to Frisco, TX, later this year. But I need a reason to get back to Wichita Falls to go see a smaller city with a river. And a waterfall, but that's another blog. So, the WF Railroad Museum is my next destination when I get the time. Slight problem, folks. The museum is only open one day. That's right. One measly day. Saturday. And only open from noon until 4 p.m.

How do these folks expect to make money in tourist dollars if they are only open four hours a week?? Granted, Saturday is a popular day for touring anything, but don't you think a museum ought to be open a few other days a week? Wednesday through Saturday maybe???

The blizzards continue in the East Coast states as snow continues to pile up on top of the white stuff that's already fallen. All you East Coast readers, my heart goes out to you all. Hope you get through this.

When is too much too much for an NBA All-Star Game?? When an arena gets built in Dallas, and then it cannot even be used for the game due to excessive demand. So the game will actually be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. I am predicting that people will complain that they will be too far from the action and the sightlines won't be that great for basketball. We'll find out soon enough. Oh, by the way, at least 90,000 are expected to attend the event, which would shatter the NBA all-time record.

It's amazing how one can be preoccupied. I'm trying to save money by using --- sparingly --- the central heating system. One minute, I'm turning it on intending to leave it on for just five minutes, and then turning it off. Well, if I get on my computer, I get real preoccupied. Five minutes suddenly becomes fifteen, twenty, twenty-five minutes. Yikes! Then I run back to the thermostat to shut it off for a while. Now, I do have a space heater, but I have to position it in such a way that my bedroom door has to be slightly ajar. Oh, well......

You've read about my musings and rantings about Lubbock, Texas, in my previous blog chickenscratch. I have a hankering to get back there if I can somehow squeeze it into a future vacation. Face it, I'm just impatient with that city's skyline. So much so, that I'm itching to make a computer-generated sketch of what downtown might look like with multiple buildings in the central business district. And that's if somebody else doesn't do it first. When the NTS Building is the focal point building in your city's downtown district, then something is wrong with your city. You need excitement. You need a kaleidoscope of shapes and sizes. Those of you with computer-generated capability, call me. Better yet, write to me. You are needed. I envision Lubbock one day having an illustrated map of the city. That will only happen as soon as the things I've previously mentioned would happen there. As former President Dubya might say, "That's the way America is all about." Dream?? Perhaps. But not impossible.

And the Word Of The Day is recover. I am in the season of rest as I recover from surgery. Thanks, once again, for your thoughts and prayers during my recent operation, and after I recover from this, I will make my journey back to the grindstone known as work on Monday morning at midnight. Shift bids for schedule changes are forthcoming, and this writer is ready to move back to days if I get Saturdays off. What a way to recover from working graveyard!

And there you are.

Boy, spring won't get there soon enough.

And the NTS Building is not necessarily bad, but it's just not something you need to "remember" or stand out. It makes a better complementary building. I wish I could put a conception on a possible WesTex Tower to show everyone what it would look like.
