Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / A Houston Sportscaster's Unexpected Return

Fortunately, after reading some stuff on the internet this morning, I'm glad I've already finished my coffee. I'll tell you about the surprise from Southeast Texas that would have had me spew my coffee out. Hi, again, everyone! You can just see what we have not done in too long. I've got to do some scattershooting for you right here, and it just kills me to put it off any longer, so here I go....

Wonder how many TV viewers in Houston didn't see this coming? Former KTRK-TV (Channel 13) sportscaster Bob Allen was supposed to already be retired from the job that he loved for so long, telling so many stories to Houston sports fans for 38 years at the ABC affiliate. Supposed to be, even though he said he wasn't really retiring; rather, he wanted to do other things, and so he stepped down from that post. (Personally, I took it as a retirement of sorts, so I'm going with that.) Well, across town at KHOU-TV (Channel 11, a CBS affiliate), their sports director, Butch Alsandor, just stepped down after serving there for 20 years, the last four years as sports director. So what happens??

Just guess.

You guessed it. Bob Allen made a surprise move, deciding to unretire and make his move to KHOU to be their new sports director. Unbelievable. He says he didn't expect Butch to step down when he did, and he didn't even think about it. But, what the heck? He decided to casually talk to Channel 11 officials. The rest will be history once he takes to the airwaves once again on April 25. Nonetheless, it will be good to see him back on TV there. He's a Houston legend, and he has to stick around in case my Astros get back to the World Series sometime after this writing.

In beautiful Frisco, Texas, they have just named their newest high school after a former superintendent. I predicted this very thing would happen the moment that gentleman retired last winter, so it has happened. Dr Rick Reedy, who had graciously served as the Frisco school district superintendent for 16 years and during the most important growth period in the city's history, will be so honored as the namesake of Frisco ISD's eighth high school when it opens in the fall of 2015. Well done. He richly deserves this honor, and we're going to see that come to fruition. Construction will begin on the new school this summer.

By the way, Reedy will be the second former superintendent to have a high school namesake in Frisco. The other was Dr Justin Wakeland, whose campus opened in 2006. They're doing quite well, thank you very much.

My recent trip to Wichita Falls, Texas, had me eating a very good, succulent bone-in ribeye steak at McBride's Steakhouse (the one on Maplewood on the city's south side). Good baked potato, too. But what I remember best is a single fried onion ring that was placed as a garnish on top of the potato. It was so good that I'll need to get back there just to order some onion rings.

Anyone surprised by the starts some Major League baseball teams are having? Kansas City is off to a good start. Atlanta and Oakland are just red hot right now. One of the teams I predicted to go to the World Series, the Los Angeles Angels, is not starting well so far. They're 2-8 at this writing, having come off a 5-0 loss..........to my Astros!

I can't help but think of country music legend Glen Campbell. He's in the middle of his Farewell Tour, but he is doing so while battling Alzheimer's disease. Hard to believe that he would go through something like that. Thoughts and prayers are extended to him and his loved ones. All you Glen Campbell fans can just feel free to comment in the section below. Maybe you just have a favorite song by Glen (I have several). What a great artist, and he will be missed immeasurably in the music world.

Got to do some stupid criminal news, and this time, some revealing news about the shape of things on the road. I'll just let you look at this....

And now, it's time for our Word Of The Day here on Scattershooting. Today's word is green. Hey, even picked the right color. Spring is here, and that means green leaves on trees that surround me. The shrubs are nice and green, too, at the apartment complex where I'm at, and I never talk about shrubs. You know that The Masters is in progress in Augusta, GA, and there's plenty of green there, pine trees, fairway and all. Not to mention Tiger Woods facing disqualification from the tournament for an illegal drop shot on 15 (Serves him right for letting Dictator Obama hang out with him recently, but that's another post for another day). And earlier this week, I just made some jalapeno cornbread for the folks at my work office, and those peppers were really green. Isn't it great that I get to scattershoot with you from my second floor apartment? That should make you green with envy!

And there you are.

Speaking of spring fashions, I was entered into a contest at work to see who had the best spring clothing on. No word yet on whether I've won for my shift or not.

Good to see the Astros getting a big Opening Day win over the Rangers, but that victory they had over LA has convinced me that better days really are ahead for those guys.
