Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Austin's KOKE-FM Coming Into Its Own Now - And Sounding Great!

Posted 04-13-2013 at 10:10 AM by case44

Well, it looks like Austin radio has some real competition in the country music field now. Last summer's rebirth of KOKE-FM (99.3 and 98.5) signaled the dawn of a new era on Austin's airwaves when Eric Raines, "Barbecue" Bob Cole, and Tom Allen returned to FM life.

Local radio can still work again.

Judging from the recent ratings, KOKE-FM, admittedly, still has a mountain to climb. But they do have some loyal listeners, particularly disgruntled former KVET-FM (98.1) listeners. If they increase their promotions and ads, they'll gain more listeners and have a bigger impact there. It'd be nice if the station were on a single channel with a stronger signal, but such was not available. So, they are in two places on lower-power stations, though 99.3 reaches Temple pretty well.

KOKE could use a midday deejay on Mondays through Fridays, but other than that, all the kinks that plagued the station early have been ironed out. They had a lot of technical problems for a few months, plus the crew had to settle on a format for the programs, as the programming was quite sloppy. And the commercials have been built up over time, as new sponsors keep coming. You'll be hearing Bob Cole on a majority of the ads, but it's always great fun listening to him. Best of all, KOKE is owned by a local company, not a corporate entity. Listening to them today, they sound much better than they did four months ago.

Over time, KOKE should be right up there competing with market leader KASE-FM (100.7) and former ratings champ KVET to see who will win out. Time will tell, but I'll be listening.

Since this writing, the 99.3 signal has been upgraded to include more areas around Austin, mostly north and east. 105.3 has also been added to include areas inside of Austin's inner-loop system (U.S. 183 East and North, MoPac, and West Ben White). If only now the 99.3 would have a little more clarity on the radio when I'm down that way.

But, then, that's how it is when you have a lower-powered signal.
