Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

East Austin Conversion Is Long Overdue

Posted 10-16-2016 at 07:29 PM by case44

I had to do a getaway to Austin on an early Saturday morning. Just had to. Since my work schedule is changing in another week or so, there won't be anymore Saturday trips. Not for a while, anyway.

Once in Austin, I had to take a look at a couple of freeway projects currently in progress. TXDOT is doing a nice job with the MoPac Expressway expansion (State Loop 1), and that includes putting together a managed lane in each direction from Parmer Lane to the Colorado River. So far, so good.

It's the other project in the city that I'm more interested in. This one is on the east side of Austin, and one that is going to be pivotal for mobility, new development, and relief for a section of Interstate 35. Officials call this the Bergstrom Expressway, but it's not known if it will continue to be the name of the road. The new work will run along what is currently Ed Bluestein Boulevard (U.S. Highway 183). It's a project whose time has come, as feeder roads are the first things to be built here. Dirt is being turned as we speak. The current boulevard will eventually have traffic moved to the feeders while Ed Bluestein is going to be torn up and rebuilt as a limited-access toll expressway with grade separations. This arrangement will give Austin another north-south artery choice. Completion is expected around 2019 to 2020. If nothing else, here's another opportunity to turn dog poop into gold. For years, I had actually hoped for an update on Ed Blue, and finally, it's here.

Excitement abounds in Austin. Further mobility improvement is on the way.

By the way, check out Downtown Austin on your next visit. Lots of new things going on.

Also, next time I'm down there, I'll check out Black's Barbecue's new Guadalupe location. The address says Guadalupe but it's actually tucked behind another business and it's on an adjoining side street.
