Thornton CO Town History - 1950's

Posted 09-22-2017 at 08:28 AM by NorthDenverGirl

I love some of the older houses in Thornton, while they may not have all the charm in the world, especially those that have not been remodeled, they are a part of the town's history.

Located off Washington Street, the original neighborhood had 3 model homes that opened to the public in April of 1953.

These one-story solid brick homes make up much of the South area of Denver today and have some of the lowest house prices in Thornton.

January 31, 1954, marked move-in day for the new Thornton residents. 40 families moved in at that time.

It took until May of 1955 for Thornton to get its own shopping center. Also located off Washington Street the shopping center included a Woolworths (you don't see those around these days) and a Millers Grocery Store.

In 1956 the city of Thornton was incorporated as a Colorado City. The population at this time was over 8,000 and was just one square mile in size. Hard to see that now with how far Thornton has come.

In 1959 the Thornton Community Building which now stands next to the Thornton pull of Thornton Parkway was donated by the Thornton Women's Club.

It's hard to imagine Thornton being such a small city and not having all the great amenities we have now. Thornton has so many different neighborhoods that vary in age, size and home types. I love this about Thornton though, it gives homeowners a chance to find the perfect neighborhood to suit them!
