Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Some 4th Adjustments For This Year, And You Know Why

Posted 07-05-2020 at 09:12 AM by case44

As I mentioned in my previous chickenscratch (tailor-made for computers, of course ), your writer mentioned Round Rock and Austin. Well, yes, I had decided to take a brief road trip.

On the 4th of July, no less.

I had to resort to a local classical radio station if I wanted to get my fix of patriotic music; otherwise, I'd have had to hum it. The Arlington 4th of July Parade had been cancelled due to a recent spike in COVID cases in Tarrant County, Texas, and that decision meant that Case needed to make adjustments. And it didn't feel like the 4th yesterday. It just didn't.

Round Rock meant barbecue on the patio at Salt Lick, a very tasty and reliable Central Texas legend. Yes, we had to eat on the patio Saturday, as the restaurant officials decided not to open their dining area. Food was good, as always, although I had to compete with a few flies while chowing down. I had set a goal to hit Round Rock Donuts right around 5 a.m. That did not happen. Ol' Case had a traffic delay occur on Interstate 35E near Carl's Corner around 3:15. Twenty-five minutes of standstill delay. That's right, a backup. And in the rural areas, no less. The reason? A stalled vehicle impeded the right lane. There was no place to get off, and I basically had to wait for movement. By the time five o'clock hit, I was still in Belton, Texas, and there was no way, at that point, that I could avoid a long line at Round Rock Donuts. So I passed on that and settled for Whataburger, McDonald's, and Starbucks in Belton. They were convenient.

As for sight-seeing in Austin, they just keep building in the city and in the suburbs. More apartments are going up around the Austin area. Construction on U.S. 183 in East Austin is plugging away very nicely between State Highway 71 and RM 969. North of 969, the road effectively is completed up to U.S. 290, and then construction continues at the eventual stack at I-35. What I don't understand is, why don't they have a ramp connecting southbound 183 with northbound 35. It's badly needed. Hopefully, the Texas Department of Transportation will see this and rectify that.

Texas just keeps getting better and better. It was just great getting out on the road and seeing Central Texas once again, even for just a few hours. Today, I'm at home getting things ready for San Angelo, and so, I must be moving along.
