Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

MLB May Be Expanding, But Is Now The Time?

Posted 05-02-2023 at 06:58 PM by case44

Major League Baseball has been fueling talks that they are looking at expanding their repertoire to thirty-two teams. That's right, sixteen in each league. Thirty years ago, I would have been for the idea of having such for the sake of balance.

But, amidst all the discussions amongst the powers that be, is this the right time to expand?

Too many factors in the negative play into this. Our country is very unstable right now, and Canada isn't any better. We are in a forced labor crisis (where many folks have decided to let government pay them to not work) that's killing many businesses and potential new ones. It doesn't help MLB that our nation's economy is seriously in the tank right now, thanks in no small part to Joe Biden* and his horrible minions. This has to affect not just ticket prices, concessions, and parking, but also the cost of getting new ballparks built, as well. And some of our big cities are facing some of the worst crime numbers imaginable, especially in places like Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland, which is on some folks' radar screen as a target for one of the two prospective expansion teams. Too many questions right now. While one franchise is in the process of relocating its team, it still begs the question: Is now the time?

Forgive me, sports fans (literally, this time), but America needs to get this crime under control and our economy stabilized, and neither will likely happen in, at least, the next two years. Cities like Portland and Nashville are cans being kicked around for expansion, but there are also places like Charlotte, Montreal, and even Mexico City, for goodness sake. Canada's political situation is so bad right now that I don't know how the Toronto Blue Jays can even survive under those tense condition. That makes it potentially difficult for Montreal right now in their quest for a new team. And let's not forget Tampa Bay needing a new place to play for the Rays, currently at St Petersburg's Tropicana Field, but who faces the window of opportunity for a new facility closing ever so slowly.

Sorry, gang, but things in America need to get stabilized first before Major League Baseball can commence with expansion. Look, I'd love to see two new teams play real soon and go up against my World Champion Houston Astros, but let's be realistic. It just isn't time yet to expand.
