Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Top Ten.........Hamburger Places

Any time I travel my dearly and great state of Texas, it is such a privilege to sit down at one of the great burger places that Texans love to chow down at. Many of you out there have favorites of your own, I'm sure.

So, this buzz-haired Texas critter is curling up at his computer, fidgeting, thinking, fidgeting some more, and thinking some more about what his top ten burger places might be. How about we all saunter over to our wonderful, cozy computer campfire for some tasty tidbits? This will be a new, occasional feature which I'm debuting here on Case's Column. It's going to be called Case's Top Ten, and the subject here will be hamburger places and I how I'm ranking them. Now, this ain't Letterman, and this ain't Casey Kasem. This is totally different. Those of you Texas readers that have not been to any of these places, well, I hope I just get your appetites hopping.

Here we go, folks. The following are my personal picks for the Top Ten Hamburger Places I've Eaten At:

10. Prince's Hamburgers - Houston - Elvis is still in the building here. Great charbroiled goodness with great shakes.
9. Goff's - Dallas - That gruff ol' dude who used to run the Dallas location is gone now, but their burgers are still worth going for. Pricey, but good.
8. Caprock Cafe - Lubbock - So far, this is the best I've had there. More of a sports bar theme, but good burgers.
7. Fuddrucker's - Grapevine (all over Texas) - Hey, this thing started in San Antonio, but you get to create your own burger here.
6. Cattle Rustler's - Ardmore, OK - All right, so it isn't in Texas, but where else within 90 miles of my apartment can you get a true Okie tradition: the fried onion burger?
5. Ball's Hamburgers - Dallas - Best charbroiled burger place to be found inside the LBJ Loop, with a sports theme, plus onion rings you can drive a Mack Truck through.
4. Hangtown Grill - Austin - The best of Austin as it is today. Worth a taste.
3. McClesky's - Austin (closed) - Original place where homemade buns were made, and farm-fresh ingredients. Too bad it closed years ago.
2. Scotty P's - Frisco - The best of the northern Metroplex, with charbroiled patties, lettuce, and......more lettuce!
1. Beck's Prime - Houston - This is the greatest burger place in the world. Yellow buns, fresh-cut fries, and the best charbroiled patties I've ever sunk my teeth into.

Well, there you are for this Top Ten for your perusal, and, hopefully, your approval. Now, right here, I've got my Honorable Mention candidates, too, and even though these are chains, I think they have some tremendously good burgers that I love every now and then, but I just couldn't put them in my Top Ten.

Whataburger - Corpus Christi-born-and-bred chain still strives for quality, with the best fast-food fries.
Chili's - They never go wrong with something not on the menu now: the Chili's Trip.....chili, cheese, and sauteed onions.
TGI Friday's - Great charbroiled taste.
Carl's Jr - Ditto.

I know there are places that I'd still like to try in the cities mentioned. Heck, the state I live in saw the invention of the hamburger. It was in Athens, Texas, many moons ago. One of these days, I hope to find the best burger in El Paso, College Station, Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, Galveston, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and other places in Texas and Oklahoma that I'd love to sink my teeth into with unlimited, unashamed, and unapologetic bouts of hamburger bliss.

I like Beck's Prime whenever I'm in the Houston area. They've got some great ones. But, since you've mentioned Austin, you need to try Hut's in Austin when you get a chance.

Glad you listed Fuddruckers. Long one of my personal favorites. You get to make 'em yourself.
