Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Longhorn Sports Get Reacquainted With An Old Radio Friend

Posted 07-17-2023 at 03:58 PM by case44

Well, welcome back again, thrillseekers. It's time for another Scattershooting go-around on your favorite blog page, where the here and there permeate the atmosphere (as well as the blogosphere). With the hot heat outside, this would be a good time to permeate exposed body parts with a little sunscreen or sunblock. Then again, you could have a cold swimming pool in your offing, so it's convenient to just dive on in. Let's hope so.

On we go!

********

It seems like just yesterday that the Texas Longhorn sports networks had forged a deal with the then-new Austin Radio Network cluster to broadcast its games, most namely, football. At the time, it seemed like a big surprise, but it was pretty much a gamble that a new group of broadcasters were willing to take. That cluster's flagship station is KOKE-FM (99.3) and it looked like an agreement for a limited time. It's been eight years, and it now appears, however, that that limited time is up.

The Texas Longhorns had just announced that they'll have a new set of radio affiliates. The new home for them is a station they've been on before, and that's KVET-AM (1300) and KVET-FM (98.1). Yes, they're back together again, but even with that, I believe KOKE-FM will survive just fine. Mainly, it has to do with a new deal the university made with iHeart Radio and the fact that the two radio stations have stronger signals to reach more people in Central Texas than did those previous. Saturdays were always made for college football, and Austinites everywhere were always anticipating Game Day festivities. They couldn't wait for their Longhorns to be on the air and on the field, ready for action.

Longtime Longhorn radio voice Craig Way (who once worked in Dallas) is going to be at it again, providing the exciting play-by-play for the footballers (which, admittedly, include his over-the-top, over-excited point-conversion calls). That's good for everyone, including this writer. It also puts the school in good position as it enters what will be their final season in the Big 12 Conference. Next year, the 'Horns will be taking part in the Southeastern Conference, along with the Oklahoma Sooners.

As it is, the Texas Longhorns are simply reuniting with two old radio friends who have been down this road before. From the looks of things, they both intend to stay on it this time.

Last Thursday, the Calendar of Strange Holidays actually revealed that it was National French Fry Day. Well, something controversial came out of that for some reason, and then an announcement poured out on Friday that it was that day which was National French Fry Day. 'Twas a bit embarrassing, to say the least.

I'm sure most Americans wouldn't complain about having two days dedicated to French fries, but some public relations person out there, whoever it is, has got some big-time explaining to do.

Many tales --- and many tails --- abound as a California man recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Barking had to have been allowed here, but for good reason....

So, will bench coach Joe Espada be the next Houston Astros manager? Well, if the Astros don't get it together in the second half and get to where they have any hope in the playoffs, then it's time to hand manager Dusty Baker his walking papers. He had a magniferous year last year and everything went right, but that hasn't been the case this season, as the Texas Rangers have led the American League West division for much of the season.

Anything less than another World Series title just won't do. Baker's been great, and he did lend a guiding hand to a franchise that needed such at the time that they did, but it's really time to hand off the managerial duties to a younger fellow. And Joe Espada is just that guy.

H-E-B will open its new McKinney (TX) location this Wednesday, and they will be ready. I just drove by there over the weekend, and the facility looks fantastic.

I'm willing to predict where H-E-B will break ground next in Dallas-Fort Worth. I'll bet that their next four locations will be Corinth, Carrollton, Forney, and Euless. I'm more than willing to book it!

Stay tuned to Case's Column, especially you readers in North Texas, and we'll see if I'm right. And if the franchise buys any more Metroplex-area land, then I'll reveal it here, as well.

Speaking of additional land, Oak Cliff institution Hall's Honey-Fried Chicken is adding another location to its repertoire. They're adding a store in...............Carrollton. That's right, sports fans. They'll be opening soon in a new shopping center on Interstate 35E's northbound feeder between Belt Line Road and Sandy Lake Road.

That's just a few miles down the freeway from my abode. I haven't even tried the product yet, but I keep hearing about it, and most reviews have been positive. It's even been on TV's "Texas Country Reporter" with fellow Dallasite Bob Phillips. Looks like it's time for The Case to get a new to-go order from there, and it's certainly worth trying.

I've got nothing against outdoor concerts, but where does one draw the line when you deal with things like high summer temperatures? Oh, and this happened in freakin' Hartford, too. Hartford. As in Connecticut, nowhere near the southern tier of the U.S.

Country star Jason Aldean is doing better now, but over the weekend, he had to bring a sudden stop to his show in Hartford as things on stage had gotten too hot.

Your writer had the incredible privilege of meeting a famous television personality in one of the elevators at Dallas' Park Cities Baptist Church this past weekend. I got to meet Chip Waggoner of KDFW-TV (Channel 4, Fox) and his wife, Wendy, as I made my way to the first floor from the lower parking areas. Great guy. He'd been that station's morning traffic reporter for about two decades now.

The Waggoners have been members of Park Cities for a number of years, as well.

Even though the following new movie was filmed five years ago, it was a film Hollywood didn't want. Well, as it turns out, this movie was released in a limited number of locations, and despite far-left efforts to get the flick stopped, it turned out to be a smash hit and a high-grosser at the box office.

"Sound Of Freedom" is a real hit. How about a $100 million hit? And Dr Steve Turley sez that it's taking America by storm....

So, it appears that MSNBC now has come up with another new way to attack American greatness. The goons on that network are now equating physical fitness with being "far right". Folks, please do not watch that network under any circumstance. My Fox News link will share more about far-left MSDNC's gratuitous nonsense:

Never mind that this Stupid Criminal story may have been inspired by a movie in our past. I doubt that even Edward Scissorhands would have been hired to trim branches from trees just to tidy things up. Take a look at this link, and you'll agree that bearing good fruit wasn't exactly a motive here.

I heard this morning that today is National Lottery Day. You may just want to purchase a Powerball ticket when you can before today is done. As of this writing, the jackpot stands at a mere $900 million for this evening's drawing. Best of luck to all who do it.

********

Well, gentle readers, it's time for Case to give his fingers and brain a rest for now. Enjoy the summer season, and stay cool wherever you may be. And be sure to save your writer a gigantic glass of lemonade.

And there you are.

It will be interesting to see how the Longhorns and Sooners fare in their new conference next year. Did you see the article about Brett Yomark totally dissing Texas?
