When you give someone a reputation point just by clicking the "[+] Rate this post positively" in the LOWER LEFT corner of his or her post, that shows up on that poster's list as a "quick reputation". If you want to actually leave a comment to the poster as well as give them rep points, you click on the scales in the UPPER RIGHT, and a popup will give you a space to write in. You can sign it or not, as you choose.
