I would like to throw out a question.......am new to these "threads etc." We currently live in Idaho. Former Alaskans but have not been back for 10 years. Am currently considering retiring to Wash. but still want the ol' one-more-time job up there. I would be looking for anything that relinked into the State system. Nothing fancy and I would be open on location. How is the economy up there? Housing costs? Any recruiters specializing in city/muni/state employment? Thanks, E
The economy is pretty strong, but housing costs are high. I don't know about mainland AK but in SE... If you're renting- a studio apartment alone starts at $650 a month. According to Juneau's page, average house cost is 225,000, but in reality it's quite a bit higher.
Where in Idaho are you from? Just curious.
Housing costs in Juneau are insane.
Just Friday, a co-worker was trying to get a home loan, and was turned down.
$140,000 FOR A FRIGGING PEICE OF CRAP TRAILER ON A LOT!!! And let's be polite and say the trailer needed just a "bit of work".

Hey, that's not so bad! Must have been in the valley, prices are lower there.
I've always wanted one of those houses up on the hill downtown, like 5th or 6th street up there. I'd hate having to carry my groceries up those staircases, but I bet you don't get a lot of door to door salesmen there!
I want the one right next to the Mount Roberts trailhead.
