Careful with posting places like some of these posted, as people here and make a blanket statement that they are just up an moving their family to Alaska with apparently no thought, plan, job, etc might just believe you and end up in Coldfoot, Barrow, Deadhorse etc!

Point taken. Just to be clear on my opinion - it would be stupid for her to move with her family to Coldfoot, or anyplace else in Alaska, without a job

Stupid question... But I thought it would be easier to get a job in AK if you are already there?

Granted you still should research where you want to be. Maybe this person is just starting the research band thought they would ask here first. Granted the question post could have been better, but this is this Internet after all...

Moving to AK is a big deal. It is not like moving from one CONUS state to another... Even then I would make sure I had a job to go to.

Having a background in office management and IT work doesn't translate too well towards securing a job some 4000+ miles away though! At least, that's the situation for my wife and I. We're hoping to land something before we come, but realistically, the chances have GOT to be a lot better to actually be there ready to work, yes??

We're planning to head up in May to Fairbanks. We lived up there for 20 years prior to erroneously moving down here to Ohio 10 years ago. We made a mistake and hope to get back "home." We've been looking deep into where to live, what kind of jobs are there, etc. But when you're stuck working dual minimum wage jobs in a very impoverished corner of Ohio (and the US), it would be next to impossible to save up the amount of money some of you suggest! We've got around an $8000 cushion plus we'll be drawing unemployment for a few bucks to be coming in while we travel and get set up.

Our plan is to camp our way up there as frugally as possible, stay with some family for a short time once we're there, (hopefully) find work before we arrive but if not, secure something, ANYthing ASAP to get money rolling in, then... well, live!

I just think that with enough planning, realism, and willingness to both live frugally and take anything to get started, one can make it in Alaska. Despite what some of these completely jaded and (mostly) unrealistic "sourdoughs" think.

Your plan is fine. The "unrealistic sourdoughs" in this thread were commenting on the OP, who doesn't seem to have a plan or a clue.

Here's a little realism for you, though. We've all seen those who moved up on a whim become stranded and broke. The state used to have a program that paid for them to get back to where they came from (funding was cut for it some time ago)...that's how common it is. You'll see it yourself in the future and perhaps you'll think back to having called us unrealistic and jaded and understand that we were speaking the truth.

Some real advice: It is generally a bad idea to move anywhere without a plan... even within your own state.

Either get a job, have family, or have willing friends help you out when you choose to move somewhere. Don't just jump there and try to figure out what to do next.

You're right, it was - I apologized to her via DM but I suspect it was a baited post anyhow. Thanks.
