Some of our reactors down here in the Carolinas are fueled with MOX as well.

This page does a pretty good job of explaining (though it's pretty technical):

MOX, Mixed Oxide Fuel: WNA

In a nutshell, most commercial nuclear reactors use only Uranium in the core as a fuel source. In a Mixed Oxide fuel plant they also add about 7% Plutonium to the fuel. This is actually a good idea (in theory) as it burns up some of the extra nasty Plutonium we have laying around, and produces energy at the same time.

Obviously in an accident scenario though, if the fuel melts the Plutonium gets released along with everything else. Its all bad stuff, but I understand that Plutonium is supposedly even worse than the rest. I'm not a medical expert, you obviously know more about that than I.

Again, it all comes down to how much actual fuel gets released to the environment. They are only using MOX at U3, so all of it is still within the containment (and I heard that this is the first fuel cycle at that Unit with MOX, so there shouldn't be any in the Spent Fuel Pool). As for any steam escaping at U3, yes it will likey contain traces of all this stuff, including the Plutonium.

Brings to mind an old saying:

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In Practice, they are not.

This place GeigerCounters.com is no longer taking orders.

Potassium iodide supplements & a Geiger counter have now replaced sex and alcohol as the two most important things for a long and happy life.

Sweet.

Bark, did you get some of those iodine tablets? I was going to order some but then remembered that we've got shellfish allergies. So I bought some nice local Pinot instead.

Too bad they aren't birth control pills. At least it would keep the idjits from reproducing!

Workers in the area reported seeing BLUE flashes (hence my post above). It was later determined that these flashes were in fact Cerenkov Radiation caused by the high energy atomic particles decelerating within the aqueous humors of their eyeballs!

Bet you didn't hear that on the news either!
Looks like the press are finally starting to catch on about what I was talking about earlier:
