Good luck with that! Some of the BLM lands where you can prospect are open to the public, while others are already "claimed" and being worked. As long as the person pays the annual fee for the claim, he or she can continue working the parcel, but as soon as the person misses a payment, another person will claim the parcel. You have to go to the spot you want to claim, and if not marked by other people, then you can record the spot with a GPS and bring the coordinates to BLM and stake your claim. Other areas are just open to the public for panning or dredging, but not for staking as a claim.

By the way, I would advise not to enter other people's claims while looking for one that's not "staked," since some prospectors in Alaska are known for being extremely grumpy and armed to the teeth

Thank you everyone for your replies! I saw that the University of Alaska offers land for sale as well...even in southeast Alaska, which is the area I'm looking into. (There were no parcels available in the southeast for state land sales...does land ever make it OTC in that region?)

The magic words are "patented mining claim." It's probably more fruitful to pursue and try to exhaust that avenue first, rather than going the slightly more restrictive route of buying an unpatented mining claims, or going the much more research intensive route of finding land which is open for mineral entry which you can file a claim for.

If one does search on land in places in Alaska Real Estate Including Residential and Commercial Real Estate | RE/MAX, LLC.
Can also see the current price of land. I think re max is best place to buy from.
