Sell the car for what you can get out of it and fly up. You will be a lot farther ahead than driving if your funds are limited. There is a bus system in Fairbanks so you may not need a car for a bit. Mail what you need up and get the rest later!

Good luck! Adventures don't come often in life, enjoy them when you can!

So the cost to fix my car is now up to $1000. But I have to fix it to get the *expletive* back to Michigan.

I'm thinking I may just fly up and take 1timestar up on her offer. After all, the car only has 'til next September when my VISTA term is up. Then I can fly back to Michigan and pick up Red Rover and maybe she'll be practically good as new then.

Now I just have to convince my parents that's the most reasonable thing to do. While they don't want me to drive the car up, they also don't want me to fly up and buy a car in Alaska that I'll have to put a bunch of money into...

-If I fly up, and the car I buy from 1timestar breaks down, I'm stranded in Fairbanks. Where there's a bus system, and people I work with, and neighbors and people who I'm sure will give me a ride where I need to go.
-If I drive my car up, and I break down, I'm stranded somewhere in the Yukon, and I get eaten by bears.

You can fly up and buy a different car that doesn't need work. In the fall we get our PFDs so a lot of people are selling their older cars to try to move up to better cars.

I've seen older jeeps make the 400,000 mile mark. But older vehicles, and simpler to take care of and work on, not the more modern, computer gadget filled thing you're talking about...

I'd fly before trusting a car that has been proving itself unreliable recently. I've been stranded on some isolated dirt backroads in Vermont because of unreliable vehicles, with no phone service to call for help, I wouldn't want to be in that situation driving to Alaska...

Until then, I'm taking the weekend off and spending it working in a friend's booth at GenCon in Indianapolis (which I had to rent s car to get to, which was another huge ordeal).

Hopefully it's fun, like it is every year, and I go home feeling less stabby.

GenCon looks like a fun event Newtgirl... Good luck with whatever route you take. The struggle to get to where you want to be makes the reward of getting there that much sweeter.

Wow, for not being here yet, you have a pretty good grasp on what to expect! Oh, bears and wolves are interchangeable, maybe even with wolverines!
