That was when I realized the importance of Cape Sarichef's dogs. In the following days none of us left the building after dark without a dog and rifle. Our chief engineer kept a riflemen posted anytime he worked away from the station--day or night--summer or winter. The South Carolina native was not convinced about that hibernation business.

The Dogs of Cape Sarichef

The South Carolina native is my (deceased) Dad. Here's a picture of him while stationed in Alaska ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting

He took plenty of pictures (slides) while there and quite a few were of the dogs this guy is talking about. Well, he wasn't technically my Dad at the time. That came eight years later.

Interesting. I have spent some time on the north side of that Island. Your Dad was right...the bears on that Island are huge and there are lots of them. Walking out at night must have been nerve wracking.

Cool, the first time I was there was in 1975 in the Coast Guard, we decommissioned the Lighthouse Stations accross Alaska from a live watch to automated, I think that one was completed for Automation in 1979. Very neat places. Landed there in the early 90's on the beach a mile or two from the station, didn't hike up to it, but flew down low over it. It was given as were most CG light houses in Alaska some years back by the Coast Guard to Non Profit's, they have a "Bed and Breakfast" on most of them to keep up with the required Maintance to keep the place.

You should go out there some time! They do however get some kick butt storms!

What year was your dad there, I might have met him. By the Photo he was a Chief I assume. Would be neat if you can post photos here, I will try to dig some of mine up as well.

You may be old, but not that old. He was there for 18 months back in 1954 and 55. Really don't know what rank he was at the time.

When he retired after 32 yrs in the CG he was Warrant Officer 4. His last job prior to retirement was as a Marine Inspector in Alexandria Bay, NY. That's the Thousand Islands region of NY.

LOL, yeah, he got me by a couple of years. That was shortly after they rebuilt it if I recall. There was a tidal wave that destroyed the entire lighthouse that was rebuilt there in 1950, when it was distroyed, it was with the loss of all CG personnel there at the time. So he was there for the new building up higher on the bluff then.

Still a neat area to be in, wouldn't want to live there, the weather is terrible most of the time!

Was looking it up, and they tore down the old lighthouse in 1999 I guess, so it is now gone into the history books... Bummer!

I just spent the better part of a full day trying to slog through reading (understanding!) several hundred pages of archeological texts. I thought I would quick check the forum to take a break, maybe reboot the brain cells a bit.

Thank you for posting this about the dogs of Cape Sarichef and your connections to it! It does seem to have helped with the reboot at least of perspective.
