Side note to the pics above. We hiked halfway across frozen Mendenhall Lake yesterday but maintained a few feed of distance between us and the bergy bits. Read in the paper today that the ice was unstable due to a rockslide that broke up the ice earlier in the week. I wondered why there were fresh seams in the lake ice. Had I known, i wouldn't have taken the kids out on the ice.
