Looks like my friend Suzanne and I are going to fly into Anchorage right after Christmas. She is planning to buy a place near Talkeetna. Holy moly, all I can think of is what it will be like to fly into a blizzard that time of year Well, one thing for sure, I will get a pretty, good idea of the "real" Alaska instead of coming in the Summer

If anyone is from the area or knows it, please feel welcome to post your thoughts. We are planning to rent a motorhome and I'm elected to do the driving. Yes I'm an excellent driver but I'm also thinking of what the roads from Anchorage to Talkeetna will be like Talk about 2, crazy old women, LOL!! Well, Suzanne is just a youngin, 57, and I will be celebrating my 60th in Alaska looks like

Ok, I had to add this after looking at the rates for motorhomes/motels etc. I would love any suggestions telling us where we might get rooms or possibly rent a rig. I realized before I looked that anything on the internet is going to be more expensive, usually. We want a clean, neat place but we don't need fancy anything. Maybe someone knows people who rent out rooms or a room. Suzanne and I can share a room, no problem (hope she doesn't snore, never slept with her before, LOL) If she see's this post she'll kill me before we ever get to Alaska, LOL!! Oh, and if anyone knows of a looney bin up your way then we may need that before this is all over. I'll voluntarily check myself in Denise

Anchorage Alaska's Premier RV Rental Vacation Company

You'll have to call them. I don't know if they even rent motorhomes during the winter months????

I think this is one I checked on, pretty high rates for most of these outfits but the thing I am looking at now is how bad the roads are (potholes etc.) I am looking at the possibility of taking the train from Anchorage right now.

Thank you so much for helping though and I will check to be sure, this may have better rates than the ones I saw online Denise

Don't see any availability in December, can't say as I blame them, LOL! I think the train would be fun! We'll check that out!

Its only about 100 miles to Talkeetna rent a car and drive. You want nothing to do with a motorhome that late in the winter. You will get so stuck.

That seems logical to me, I will pass it on to Suzanne. Also, we just found a nice sort of B&B in Talkeetna, we could stay there but probably not a whole week but it was less then renting a motorhome. We'll check out the rental cars now Thank you much, denise

Here is some info from City-Data home page about your destination. There will be lots of info on this page. Not sure if either of you have been up there, specially in dead of winter. I'd encourage you to educate yourselves to the possible winter hazards. Good luck

We've stayed at the Talkeetna Roadhouse cheaply, especially the bunk room. In the winter, nobody even joined us in there. They also rent a small cabin out back or have private rooms upstairs. I think it was $20 for a bunk bed; $45 for a private & $80 for the cabin in winter.

The Roadhouse has the best breakfasts!

I would forget the RV in winter. I don't even think they rent them in winter due to freezing issues.

My family travels a lot in a motor home throughout Alaska. The driving part is not the problem in the winter. The problem is the water tanks and waste tanks freezing. Also RV's are not well insulated and to keep it warm is going to use a lot of propane. I doubt that there will be any RV parks open so that means no hook ups for electricity etc.

The rental car and B&B or Hotel option would be better. Try to rent a car that is 4 wheel drive preferably a SUV.

Make sure to call ahead, some places are closed for the winter.

Check out tripadvisor.
