What are the biggest safety lessons you have learned during your years of living off the grid in a cabin? Even if it's real obvious stuff, please feel free to mention it. Any help would be appreciated.
I think what your doing is great, much respect for you. The one thing I will add to all the great advice given you here is get your self a Spot satellite personal tracker. This is independent of the cell phone system and is a satellite system. you can turn it on and send friends or family message that your ok, or if you need help send a 911 message that is professionally monitored and they will dispatch help. That said if you dont want others to know where your at just dont turn it on unless you need 911 help, and remember you need a clear line of sight for it to transmit effectively ie it wont work in a steep walled canyon.
The wife and I have had one for 5 years and it goes with us when we go into the back country.

May I ask are you retired?

No, not retired but I hope to be within two years. I run a business in Anchorage that requires my presence there two days a week.

Well its been two years since I moved to my dry cabin in the middle of nowhere! I can't tell you what a learning experience it's been. But it has been wonderful, and I plan on living here for the rest of my life. I just went back and looked over all of your replies, boy I can't believe how little I knew about what I was getting into back then!!
