Land around there seems somewhat reasonably priced, and you could easily get an isolated feel without being more than a few miles from the PO and store.

Someone mentioned earlier that gas is more expensive in Alaska, and that's certainly true, but when you live rural/remote, you're just not driving that much unless you're out around Willow or something commuting into Anchorage.

I don't know if this would be a resource for you, but if not, others might find it helpful:

Ionia | Where Common Sense Comes Alive

What is this Ionia? It looks like a commune of sorts. And do they allow visitors? I looked for an FAQ, but couldn't find one.

I'll have to visit these places of course, so right now I'm just making a list, but I'm kind of leaning toward Thorne Bay, or some other town on Prince Wales Island.

I'm curious, how many of the smaller islands up there, would seem suitable for what I want? All I seem to be able to find is the 2000 census results.

I haev always been fascinated by living off grid and rural. Not that I think I will be able to do it right away... I don't want to discourage you, but I have questions that I hope you have thought of already and have answers to.

Are you good/knowledgeable at building earthships? Do you have plans for building one? And really the plans need to include how are you going to get the supplies you need to where-ever it is you want to go. I went to www.earthsips.com to get an idea of what you are talking about. Is that the site you are using?

The thing with an island is that now you need to boat everything in and can only do so when the weather agrees with boating. No big deal once you get setup as Met says, but you gotta get setup. And then most likely your docking at a rural place as well, so getting to a store could be several MORE hours and hope you have a place to store a car on the "mainland". It sounds awesome to live on an island and then you realize what it takes to get on/off the island and get supplies. But you can find stuff that could be Hermit's paradise all over AK.

I was waiting for this question I have been to Earthship Biotecture, and discussed everything with them. I plan to barge up the supplies to build it, and construct through them. I can use the ferry system to get to the mainland, and then I can take my vehicle with me to and from the island, correct?(the ones with road systems, that is)

Not really, no. He has similar ideas/thoughts/plans. I can tell you that everything I posted in response to his questions was also posted with you in mind.

If I was gonna try to live on in Alaska on a fixed income of $1k per month I'd head to POW.
