Here in Cordova, we consider Valdez to be an ugly town - what can I say? We are in the most beautiful place in the world . . .

Xaat - don't know what you look like, but based on personality, I might have to think about moving to Juneau . . .

I favor Fairbanks, just because it's soooo... nerdyliciously unpretentious. You can be a completely hopeless eccentric everywhere else, but you're really never too square for Squarebanks.

Just feels like home.

I think you'd be very disappointed... but not in Juneau!

Hmmm . . .

NOT disappointed with Juneau, or not disappointed with YOU in Juneau????

Juneau is a known variable, as is your online personality. You also are quite the photographer - you could be terribly ugly and I think I would still like you

Southeast! Moderate weather, rainforested, isolated, spectacular scenery, awesome wildlife, simplicity, quiet! Especially recommend village of Hoonah (800 humans and 3000 "grizzley" - actually coastal brown bear) and Sitka (8000 humans and diverse community).

Miles of trails to walk or mountain bike or snowmachine up into the mountains. I can go on for hours.
Anyone know what is going on in this area? Looks like someone is making a boundery of some sort.

Also, I noticed a lot of bare patches around the country side, Any idea why they are there? Volcanic area or something? Just wondering.

I couldn't get the exact location to come up on here, so here is google maps:http://maps.google.com/maps
Put this (60.571384,-150.567284) in the search block and it will come up

Might be some future moose feeding area. On occasion they have burnt or crushed areas out by Skilak to induce fresh growth. Gives the moose something to eat.

The bare patches you see are swamps. The peninsula is riddled with them and many small lakes and ponds. Many are connected by trail or stream. We have quite the canoe trail system in the Swanson River area north of Sterling.

Thanks Rance, couldn't tell, looked like areas of grass, but then I guess that makes sense. Is it kind of a mountainous area? I see there is quite a bit of less expensive land for sale in that area. That would make for a good view, if a person built in the right place, although I only saw one road in and out of the peninsula to Anchorage. Do they close the road often in the winter or for mud slides?
