I know Alaska doesn't have a law school, so I've been really curious for a while about this since I'm a law student myself. Just never asked on here and idk anyone from Alaska to ask personally lol. I looked it up and found that Seattle University offers a program for Alaskan law students. Is that where most Alaskans go for law school?

So without a law school in your whole state, where do you get lawyers? Do a lot of people go out of state and then return? Do you get people moving there that are already lawyers? Are there just not that many lawyers in the state? Or something else?

Is it mainly people that had been practicing attorneys elsewhere in the US and decided to relocate to Alaska? Or a job transfer? That whole situation is so confusing to me. Because every other state has its own law school(s) that provide a continual flow of employees into the private sector and government jobs. It just seems like there would have to be a huge deficit of lawyers in Alaska. And most politicians go through law school as well. Whether that's good or bad is for another time. But wouldn't a lot of the politicians be under-trained in areas regarding law and civic duties and functions?

Lisa Murkowski went to Willamette Law School in Salem, Oregon.

Many Alaskan students attend out-of-state colleges and universities. I think it's good for them to experience the outside world before settling in for a life in Alaska.

That said, I think akpl is right in that most come from elsewhere.

We don't have a medical school, yet we have doctors.
Simple: people go to school somewhere else and then move here.

My understanding is the Seattle University program is relatively new and that every other lawyer went to law school outside of Alaska.

As a related comment, we have no medical schools in Alaska either, which is why our best and brightest young people who have aspirations to pursue careers as doctors have to leave Alaska.

After experiencing life outside of Alaska, the overwhelming majority of them choose not to return after graduation.

Even though their decisions contribute to the shortage of doctors here in Alaska, I honestly cannot blame them because I would do the same thing.

Are med schools the same though? And do doctors have something like the bar exam? Once you pass a bar exam, you're only licensed to practice in that state. Whichever state you go to school in is the state you're best prepared to take the bar in also. So if the students to go Washington for school, their education is tailored to the Washington bar exam. I'm not sure if med school is like that...is it?

How does it affect the state then? Are the lawyers and doctors in Alaska generally subpar compared to the rest of the state? Or is there just a lack of access to both compared to others?
